The spark has been struck!
Interpret Scotland and the Association for Heritage Interpretation jointly hosted The Vital Spark, a very successful international conference about heritage interpretation at the Aviemore Highland Resort from Sunday 30 September to Wednesday 3 October, 2007.
Over 300 delegates from many countries shared experiences, learned from each other and reinforced the networks of professional interpretation organisations and individual interpreters around the world.
Formal papers from the conference will be published on the Association for Heritage Interpretation’s website later in the year. In the meantime, many of the presentations are available from the page giving the full programme.
You can also check the set of conference photos on flickr to strike your own spark!

Key themes
The Vital Spark is an integral part of Highland 2007, our principal sponsor and coordinator of Scotland’s year-long celebration of Highland culture. Our four themes reflect this background but are also highly relevant to those from all corners of the globe who plan, direct, manage and interpret sites of natural and cultural value. The themes are:
- The Vital Spark: interpretation as the driver for cultural regeneration
- Creativity and innovation: interpreting remote and fragile areas
- Voices in interpretation: languages, cultures and communities
- Authenticity and re-interpretation: traditional icons in the 21st century
